Bioluminescence

Overview

This is a portrait project that represents how my life has transformed over the past few years and I've realized the people that come and go in life are a lot like scaffolding, they help you reach hard to reach areas and once you do, they are gone.

I wanted to utilize the elements and colors that I have come to appreciate working at the Sea Lab aquarium nursery and being involved in aquatic excursions through out my life. Bioluminescent plankton was one of my first encounters with aquatic life. During the night, Plankton glow when jostled or swayed in the water. Here I used bioluminescent liquid to signify the growth of my creativity. The scaffolding is made of black steel to signify the hardship of being there for someone.

This sequence starts with the liquid glowing and growing. The liquid growing represents my growth in art and animation while the glowing bioluminescence represents my creativity. Then the scaffolding, which represents the people in my life who have helped me grow and be creative, starts to slowly emerge to help form the letter "N". The first letter of my name.

I wanted to create a darker atmosphere using the liquid form as a light source that turns into the letter “N”. As the forms grow into the letter, the bioluminescent light represents the growth of my creativity, or the growth of the letter form.

Bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by a living organism. It is a form of chemiluminescence. Bioluminescence occurs widely in marine vertebrates and invertebrates, as well as in some fungi, microorganisms including some bioluminescent bacteria, and terrestrial arthropods such as fireflies.

My concept needed to show a scaffolding like structure growing or building. I chose to play with contrast the same way a diamond comes from ash, I used a dark and intimidating metal material for the scaffolding to represent the hardship that helped mold me. The liquid form came from the photo that inspired the direction.
